evie's first "bra"

evie's first "bra"

hmmm. well, yes, those are mommy's breasts. they're not for evie (anymore). we've gone thru this a lot lately. she just seems a little interested in what they're all about.

later in the morning she was digging thru mike's night stand and pulled out some eye shades which she immediately put around her neck and said "bra, evie's bra".

she wore it to the grocery store.

oy

is it friday the 13th yet? cause it really felt like things were aligning against us. evie and i started our friday together battling over getting dressed. she was perfectly content to wear her pajama top and diaper all day today. she really didn't want to take that pajama top off. it took me over an hour to finally get her dressed. it may not sound like a big deal, but it can be a tad exhausting.

next up, we headed over to the presidio to meet up with our friday friends at a playground. this was actually really nice. the playground is really nice, and compared to the playgrounds in our neighborhood, it was like the ritz. only problem? poop. evie's system was a tad, um, off (i'm guessing the black beans for lunch and white beans for dinner were the culprit). we're talking six poopy diapers in a day. three while we were out. thank goodness i had three diapers. the only thing worse than six diapers in a day is six diapers and diaper rash. the poor thing was in pain every time she went.

ok, so combine an upset system and diaper rash with tooth number 20 and throw in a stubborn temperament (i think she gets that from her dad) and we didn't have as much fun as we do on a normal friday.

but all was not lost. she sang "time after time" to me this morning in the midst of the clothing battle. i believe it was self-preservation as i was beginning to look for a band of gypsies to sell her to. then at dinner tonight we had family singing. "twinkle, twinkle", "goosey goosey gander" and "row row row your boat". i'm just going to have to say that we rocked.

a song

i wanted to get evie out for a while yesterday, but it was cold, so i decided that we would go out and take a ride on the F-market streetcar. evie loves riding the train, and the the F is an old fashioned streetcar that you can catch pretty much at the end of our street. we had a fun ride, a good walk on market street, and avoided the rain that started falling while we were out without an umbrella.

on the way home, i asked evie if she wanted to sing a song for me. she started singing in her quiet, high-pitched voice. i listened for a bit trying to figure out what she was singing. sometimes it's "goosey gander", others it's a sesame street song about "penguins by the door". this one took me a second to place. i heard "clock tick think of you".

oh my! it's "time after time". the cyndi lauper song. i sing it to her whenever i'm putting her to bed or i want to calm her down. she proceeded to sing a whole verse to me.

i almost cried. i'm tearing up just thinking about it now. who knew she was listening?

making the best of a rainy day

19/20

we are 95% of the way thru the baby teeth now! i felt #19 coming in last night. i finally remembered to check after a bad night of sleep and a couple of grumpy days. i will say that this was the easiest of these last three, so that bodes well for #20, whenever it decides to make an appearance.

the only question now is, what will i blame every temper tantrum, low fever and all other matter of bad behavior on?

witnessing history

yes, i did. i made evie sit and watch the inauguration with me today. i'm still smiling.

a near perfect day

while i'm sorry for everyone in the rest of the country that is suffering in the middle of a deep-freeze right now, i'm really happy that we are experiencing the opposite here. the weather has been in the 60's and 70's for more than a week, and the sun hasn't stopped shining. it has been lovely, and we've been out and about as much as possible.

when i woke up on saturday morning, i decided i would try to make french cheese puffs (gougeres) for breakfast. i had made them a few weeks ago, but things didn't come out right, and they were more like crackers than puffs. this time, they were nice a puffy and cheesy. they're evie's favorite thing at the bakery we go to, so it was nice to be able to make them at home.

after breakfast we headed out to the academy of sciences. it was packed, but that didn't matter to evie. there were fish and dinosaur bones to see. all pretty exciting. then we headed over to the deyoung museum and the cafe with the sculpture garden to grab some lunch. burgers. evie was pleased because there was meat - her favorite. she is not showing any signs of vegetarianism.

then back home for a glorious three hour nap. i really appreciate that she's a good napper. i think mike does too, because he was down for almost as long. it gave me time to make up a batch of chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons. the macaroons are a happy by-product of the ice cream making, which leaves me with a lot of egg whites to use up.

after the family woke up, we shared a cookie, which was messy and delicious, then headed over to a friend's place to celebrate their engagement and his birthday. evie enjoyed the people almost as much as she enjoyed the salami that was within her reach on the food table. then she sang to us on the ride home.

can a day be better than this?

by self

well this is the week of evie really starting to exert her independence more fully. she wants to do everything "by self", which is very, very cool, but it does make getting her pajamas on take a lot longer. i guess i should just be happy and look forward to the day when she can make mommy's coffee or cocktail all "by self".

music makes the world go round

it seems that evie has involved herself in a couple of different musical projects. from the videos you'd think she's only about the drums, but she blows a mean harmonica too.

what's that?

so this morning evie and i walked into the bathroom just after mike got out of the shower. and for the first time, guess what she noticed? yup, with a pointing finger, it was "what's that?".

mondays

well it's been a week since a post. lots going on here, or maybe not going on is a better way to look at it. the economy seems to be crashing down on us right now. things have dried up at work, and we're scrambling to figure out how to keep things afloat. i was really stressed at first, but then realized that years of miserliness will make this all ok. in my worst case scenario, i stay at home with evie for a year while we wait for the economy to improve. when i think about it that way, it doesn't seem so bad.

truthfully, though, it is still hard for me to imagine staying at home. i think i'm going to keep my fingers crossed that things pick up at work.

all that said, my girl and some gorgeous weather was the perfect antidote for the stress. we had a fun weekend starting with a fun day at the playground with her friends on friday. her friend marlon came over on friday night to play with us while his parents went out for an evening. we're finally going to get the whole babysitting swapping going, and friday was our first go. the kids had a great time playing together until bedtime. evie went down like a champ with mike - marlon was a bit more of a challenge for me. everything was going pretty well until i sang him a song that had the word "mama" in it. he heard that and his lips started to quiver and a tear rolled down his cheek as he said "mama und papa". i ended up holding him until he fell asleep. not too bad. and i look forward to our night out.

the rest of the weekend was more fun with evie. we hung out. we read. we sang. we went to a birthday party and did painting and decorated butterfly wings. it was all really nice. so going back to the gloom of work made this even more of a monday than usual. i came home from work starting to feel a little down again.

evie fixed that.

after dinner she overturned the drum we got her for christmas and started pretending that it was a pot and she was cooking. she kept stirring and adding salt. then i helped her add more stuff to the pot - including an awful lot of "sausage". as we stirred and smiled all of my worries just disappeared for a while. it must be magic soup that she made.

brighton will be around for a few more weeks before he and his family move to new mexico. we're going to miss them.

we met up with the whole family again last saturday at tartine, this great bakery about six blocks from our house. the place is almost always packed, but we've found that if we arrive before 8:30 on saturday mornings, it's quite civilized. evie enjoys a gougere (french cheesy-poof) and scamming ham from mom and dad. we all gathered there for a nice breakfast, and it must have had some other magical effect on evie, because when we got home she wanted to take a nap at 10 am, then slept for 5 hours! definitely a record.

to increase our fun, our friends claudia and marlon joined us.

evie even got to ride a bear.

the picture should clue you in on our trip to the sf zoo. that's where we spent mike's birthday. lots of fun. and no one eaten by a tiger, so we call that a success!

here's a video of some chimps that entertained us:
