i'm not much for holiday decorations, but i have to say, having evie makes it feel like more of a big deal to me. it kind of surprised me, because i figured that it really doesn't matter to her at all, but here i am putting up the stockings grandma sent, and lighting up a little live tree (evie loves looking at the lights). i guess i'm not quite the scrooge i thought i was...

well she may be messy, but she is a good eater. that'd be buffalo, avocado, sweet potato and brocolli she's having for dinner. believe it or not, most of it does make it to her mouth.

oh, and check out those chompers. they total six now!

four legged friends, beware!

evie recently discovered cats. it started when we were feeding kimberly's cat frida, and continued on our trip to chicago, where there were three cats. mike's niece daryl's cat "big" was a big hit with evie. she basically chased him whenever she saw him. she couldn't figure out what to do when she caught him, though.

we took evie to see the olafur eliason exhibit at the sfmoma on a rainy day a couple of weeks ago. they built a giant kaleidoscope on the walkway to the 5th floor. lots of great things to look at. evie seemed to enjoy all of the lights.

we bought her a children's book of andy warhol drawings to mark the occasion. nice for evie and mom and dad.

thanksgiving with the mccurdys

we flew to chicago to spend thanksgiving with mike's family and have a memorial for his dad. the trip's been great, and dinner was fantastic, but evie started to get overwhelmed with all of the people today. she's sleeping now, so mom and dad are happy.

heart melting!

so little ms. evie has been pretty great lately. getting more and more animated all of the time. she's a little chatterbox (like her mom). last week she was in her high chair, and she looked over at her dad and sai "hi da". we both heard it and wondered if it was on purpose, or a random occurrence. as the week went on we heard more "da's" and more "hi's" and some ""ma's"". still, i was a little skeptical that it was on purpose. then this morning i walked into her room to pick her up from her crib and she reached up an said "ma ma". yeah, this time i decided it was on purpose. amazing and heart melting.

made being up at six totally worth while! it even made me forget about those four teeth she has coming in on top for a minute.

we head to naperville (chicago) later today for thanksgiving. evie's going to get to meet more family (aunt sue and her family and buzz & judy). please cross your fingers for a smooth trip!

it's an 11!

yeah, an 11, as in 11 hours of sleep last night for evie! all that meat is making her sleepy. she was a little cranky tonight, and actually refused most of her dinner (a first), so i'm not hopeful that we're going to see a repeat performance.

evie gets the pincer down

evie is developmentally ahead of schedule on all thing eating related. more proof that she is our daughter. check out her pincer grip. that girl wants all food in her mouth.



it seems that she's finally topped 16 pounds, so all of this eating is good!

vegetarians need not apply

evie's taking after good ol' moms and pops with her love of all things food. we started her on meat a couple of weeks ago, and so far chicken, turkey and beef are all to her liking. of course she's getting the fancy grass fed, organic beef that mike and i can't afford for ourselves...

ok, so i didn't get her a costume. does it really make me a bad mom? i did find something vaguely ethnic looking in her closet, and she has her little bandana bib... maybe a cowgirl? i think i could convince her of that if i had too...

and the new record is...

10 hours! evie went 10 hours between feedings last night. she slept until 5:07 am before she woke up and wanted to eat. absolute joy on my part. we're getting closer and closer to her being able to go the whole night - i'm looking for 12 hours, is that greedy?

we added chicken and butternut squash to her diet recently. not sure if the new foods are helping, but they sure aren't hurting!

as of yesterday, little ms. evie can now pull herself to standing. we're rethinking the placement of everything.



sorry about the orientation, i keep forgetting to keep the camera horizontal for video. perhaps someday i will learn, or evie will teach me.

and then there were three...

teeth that is. top left tooth came in last night. it wasn't pretty, but it did make me feel good that i was eventually able to comfort her. today she's in high spirits. probably because she doesn't realize there are more teeth to come...

sunday morning jam

evie really enjoys when mike plays the guitar for her. this morning, she decided to get in on the action.

9.5!

yup, that's the new record. nine and a half hours of sleep in a row last night. can you hear my smile?

mmm. bananas.

so we can add bananas to the list of things that evie likes. i like how long the "likes" list is getting.

evie hit the swings at the park with her friend lucie today.

there's no place like home

evie got some new shoes, and she loves tapping her feet together trying to get back to kansas.

a few laughs

when evie's in a good mood in the morning (which is usually), she can share some great laughs with us. here are a few for you to enjoy. please ignore that annoying strand of hair of mine spoiling the picture.



as an aside, we tried peas today. NOT a hit.

dancing queen

we were having dinner the other night and little ms. evie was feeling the music. the picture's a little grainy, but i think you'll get the picture.

good walk + huge meal + scary diaper = best night ever

mike joined us on our mom's walk yesterday. the mom's walk turned
out to be just claudia and marlon and us, but it was quite lovely.
beautiful weather and tartine. turns out if you go there at 3 pm,
the place seems to magically clear out right about that time. quite
nice.

after the walk, we headed home and evie had her first taste of
oatmeal - much more of a hit than the rice cereal - and some sweet
potatoes. she was a very hungry girl. then quite a lot of water,
which she'll drink now if i just put a little bit of breast milk in it.

well it seems all that food and water needed to made some space in
her system... the scary diapers have arrived. that's quite a change
they take. but we all survived it (so far). it makes infant potty
training seem more attractive. i think i'll be checking out diaper free baby.

but the best news is that this all added up to the BEST NIGHT EVER!
evie went to be a little before 7 pm, and didn't wake up until 2:30
to eat. then back to sleep until after 6 am. mom & dad are very
pleased. if only we'd go to sleep when she does, we'd be well rested
now...

sweet potato love

evie tried sweet potato for the first time today. let's just say it was a hit. see for yourself.



i think sweet potato love would be a good name for a band, though asleep at the boob still has a nice ring to it too...

new nanny share partner, check

big sighs of relief over here as we found a new nanny share partner. the family we've been sharing with has a new baby coming any moment, and mom's going to start staying home, so we needed to find someone new. enter craigslist. we talked to a couple of couples, both nice, but i knew dana & david (daughter paloma) would be a match when he said he was a bass player. small world.

and the new record is...

that'd be 7 hours and 45 minutes of straight sleeping last night. do i hear 8?

more gruel, miss?

last week's doctors appointment gave us the green light to get started with solids. so far evie has had mixed reviews.

initially, she seemed eager to try things...



then she found out it was rice cereal...



so on to avocados, a better review, but we need to work on her manners...

can you hear them?

that's the sound of angels singing, or just the sound of me well rested. last night evie only woke up once, after 7 hours of sleep. mom and dad are pretty friggin happy right now...

small victories and a new arrival

Today marks two new milestones for Evie. She spent last night in her
crib in her own room!!!! I had to feed her twice during the night,
but all in all it was a success. Then this morning when I was
feeding her, I felt (ouch) her first tooth has finally come through.
Lots of new stuff.

spent friday afternoon walking with our ragtag mom's group up to the panhandle park. ms. evie is really starting to enjoy the other babies and the pigeons. i feel so fortunate that she and i can spend fridays together. thus the happy smiles.

getting started with evie's story

Evie turned 5 months last week, and I have yet to record anything remotely like a baby book for her, so I thought I'd start recording her milestones here for family to read about. She "crawled" for the first time the other day. See the video, but ignore my annoying soundtrack.
