um, that's a milestone i wasn't looking forward to...
so mike, evie and i were in bed on saturday morning, things were all going along nicely. there was cuddling and evie was chattering away. suddenly, she said something that caught my attention.
"um, did she just say 'no s*h*i*t'?"
"yeah, that's what i was just thinking."
great.
you know that i don't use that kind of language. she must be watching cable when i'm at work...

my girl celebrates her first year!
we made it!
yesterday we celebrated evie's first birthday and easter. i got her all dolled up in a pretty pink dress and her fuzzy, pink bunny coat. i love being in charge! i couldn't get her to wear the cute little shoes i bought for her, though. she cries whenever i put regular shoes on her. perhaps we need to move to kentucky...
we started the morning at home with some presents and extra berries for breakfast. then we went over to george, tracy and lainey's to celebrate easter. lainey officially became evie's honorary big sister. tracy and i agree that this is, by far, the easiest way for them to have siblings.
ms. evie did not find the cake to her liking. pretty much spit out the first two bites, then ate a little frosting. i think maybe she was disappointed that it wasn't chocolate. i guess i should be happy that she'd much rather eat fruit.
this first year was, by far, the best year of my life so far. i look forward to it getting better and better.

is that a temperature or a radio station?
poor ms. evie has been battling a bug the past few days. it started as a low grade fever on monday morning. we attributed it to her new tooth, but thenit hit 103.6 after i got home from work. ugh. still, she was doing pretty well. cranky and sleepy, but still taking in fluids and playing during the day. then the night before last it hit 104.7! yowza. turns out in babies that's not a big deal. over 105 is.
we went into the doc, just in case. naturally the fever broke just before we went it. figures. isn't that how it always works? doc figured it was probably just roseola. after one more return of the fever thursday night, this morning the spots appeared, so the doc was right - roseola.
her mood is improving (fever=cranky evie) and her appetite has returned. hopefully she'll be back to normal for her birthday on sunday.

not so fast, hombre
so, me and my non-nursing breasts nestled themselves into bed last night, only to be awakened by evie's screams a little before midnight. i guess the new tooth and the thought of making it thru the day without nursing woke her up. so, i ended up nursing after all. it was good. she was really screaming, and they are still my magic weapon. we'll just have to see how things go over the next couple of weeks.

the end of an era?
so for the first time in 357 days, i didn't nurse evie. we were down to three times a day (morning, after work, before bed) for about a month, then she skipped a few feedings this week. today, nothing. i don't know if this means we're done all together, or if it was just for the day. still not sure exactly how i feel about it, but i think this is good. i was worried that weaning would be a big deal (and maybe it still will be), so it would be nice if it turned out to be this easy.

and so it begins
mark your calendars. i officially have a toddler. today, march 9th at approximately 1:45 pm, my daughter looked me straight in the eye and said "neh" when i told her to come to me.
mom, i'm officially going to start getting as good as i gave. you can start laughing now.

a day at the beach
it was a lovely day here in sf, so we headed over to baker beach for a little sand and sun. i had evie in a cute little sun top, but this being sf, it was only about 50 degrees when we got to the beach, so the long sleeved shirt was put on over it. it was still a great day, though. after all, you had sand, surf, the golden gate bridge and cheese...

don't i look cute in my new dress?
hey grandma, here's proof that i do put evie in a dress occasionally. as long as i don't have to do the same, we're all good.
the mon/weds/thurs girls club on a friday night
gladys and paloma came over for a friday night last week, so that the moms and dads could go out for korean bbq and ice cream. very enjoyable. it wasn't a late night, we were home at 9:30, but we were surprised to find the girls still wide awake. they were just having way too much fun to be bothered with something like sleep.

frogs!
last friday, we went to the bay area discovery museum up in sausalito. it's in an old fort at the base of the golden gate bridge. the setting is just spectacular, and there are lots of great things to see and do.
check out the frogs in the tubes (not real, in case you were wondering). there are buttons on the floor that the kids can push to make the frogs mouths move and air bubbles come out. VERY exciting.

walking tall
we finally managed to capture a little more video of evie walking. over the weekend she graduated from the one or two steps and falling to really walking. she's now walking everywhere and trying to run. the running generally ends in a face plant...
the video gets a little long in the middle, but there's a nice payoff at the end. be sure to have the volume on to hear some of evie's words of wisdom.

in the liquor cabinet again
ok, so she looks like fred sanford after a meal, and foster brooks when she walks, but she's all mine!
here's a small taste of her first few steps:
six steps is still the most i've seen, and she gets really distracted whenever i get the camera out, so it may be a while before you see more of this.

our very own merlin olson
so bill is like our very own merlin olson. he's this big gentle, giant that the kids just love.
we had some folks over last friday night and bill charmed the socks right off of evie and max.
it is so nice to see her finally getting over her stranger anxiety/mommy fixation to give cuddles to over people.
here she is on valentine's day showing tony the love.
and my friend heather (from high school) was here recently and got the very first snuggle i saw doled out to someone other than mom, dad or gladys.
um, well, that's different...
so last week i decided to stop pumping at work. i'm still breastfeeding, but evie's on goats milk now, so i figured i'd give myself a break during the day.
since i'm not pumping anymore, i decided to wear a normal bra this morning, instead of the nursing bras i've been wearing for the past almost eleven months. i was kind of excited by the prospect.
and then i put the bra on.
my boobs are totally different sizes now. the kid has made me totally lopsided. i really didn't expect that one.
so if you notice me listing to the right, now you'll know why.

the two step
yesterday was a big milestone. yes, that's right, the walking milestone! it wasn't much walking but a step in the morning for dad, and a couple in the evening for mom (probably somersaults and cartwheels all day for gladys!). this morning she took a few steps towards mike to say goodbye before work. very exciting.
less exciting was the climbing that also started yesterday. climbing up onto the window ledge. climbing up onto the fire place.
oh well, i guess this will keep us on our toes! i'll try to get video soon!

oh the horror
well it was a tough one this morning. things started out nicely, but quickly devolved. when i got home from work last night, evie was really tired. no afternoon nap = falling asleep at 5:30. then she slept through till 4:51 am. sounds pretty nice, right? well, i guess it was just lulling me into a false sense of complacency.
we got up. played. had some breakfast. the usual. then she had a poopy diaper. got that all cleaned up, and since she's had diaper rash lately i decided to let her go au naturale for a while. i think you know where this story is headed...
evie was happily frolicking in her shirt, shoes and socks. her bottom joyfully exposed. i stepped out of the room for a moment to take care of something, and by the time i came back, things weren't so happy for mom anymore.
what's that over there by the crib? a piece of wet cardboard, perhaps? i wish. that'd be a piece of poo i picked up with my bare hands. right next to a really big pile of poo. ugh. pick it up dispose of it, come back to the room. what??!! more poo!!!??? didn't you already go twice? and you stepped in it!? ugh. ugh.
let's just say my girl and i both had to have an outfit change this morning by the time this was over with.
calgon, take me away!

ready for the movies?
competition!
we attended evie's nanny share partner, paloma's, first birthday party over the weekend. there were a LOT of babies. it's a tad overwhelming. it's nice that palmona is very comfortable with mike (see pic) and me. evie crawled up to dana (paloma's mom) at one point thinking she was me. the two girls are great friends.
i will tell you, though, that i'm starting to realize more and more what kind of mom i'm going to be, or not be, as it were. i am not going to be the birthday party throwing kind of mom. they had rented a half dozen high chairs, had a huge cake, and there were a ton of presents. i think that we'll take evie out of town for her first birthday, so i can avoid all this...
