lately evie has been pitching a fit every time that we try to put shoes on her, so i decided it was time to go out and get her little feet measured. turns out they weren't so little. 4.5 on one foot and 5 on the other - no wonder those 4's made her so unhappy....
it also turns out that her feet are wide and tall (hmm, fat feet to go with her man hands, lovely), so there was only one pair of shoes (yeah, that'd be $40 shoes) in the store that we could get on her feet. wouldn't you know that they were hot pink.
and wouldn't you know that she loves them. my shoe hating daughter now wants to wear these hot pink monstrosities all of the time. including last night after her bath. what am i going to do when she wants to play dress up?

evie loves disco - the video
ok, this is probably the best video that i got from the dance party. for some reason, she just stopped moving every time i pulled out the camera. when the camera wasn't on she was looking up at the disco ball, clapping her hands and twirling around in circles. very VERY cute.

who you looking at?
so evie spent most of last week wearing little more than a diaper, since it was so blazing hot. being a slave to fashion, though, she needed to complete her look with a hat (she now runs around saying "hat" a lot).
this is her tough girl pose.

evie loves disco
last saturday, evie and i beat the heat by attending an event known as "baby loves disco". it's a dance party for babies at a san francisco dance club. evie loved it from the second that she spotted the disco ball. she spent much of the afternoon staring up at it while she twirled around in circles and clapped her hands. the whole experience was made better by the fact that there was a snack table packed with things that she loves (cheese, grapes, goldfish crackers, etc). that and she had her friends stella and charlie to dance with.
i tried to get a good video, but every time i pulled out the camera, she seemed to stop dancing, i'll see if i can find a good clip to upload, though. in the meantime, click here to see the full set of pics from the day.

the girls share a little love
it's very nice that after a whole day together, evie and paloma still like being with each other. makes me feel okay about being away for the day.

evie + cubs win = great father's day
need i say more?
i almost dressed evie up in a pretty dress for father's day, but realized that mike would probably rather see his girl in his favorite baseball gear. the only problem was the only cubs outfit we had was a 3-6 month onesie that was just a little small for my beefy gal.
enter, pair of scissors. problem solved. daddy and daughter enjoyed the game together.

big girls have all the fun
tony's daughter (eve) and grand-daughter (lilly) are here for a visit, and evie is having a blast with lilly. lilly has somewhat of a blast with evie, at least for a little while. she tends to grow a tad weary of evie's attention after a while, but she keeps coming back for more.
lilly was hula-hooping like a champ, and evie wanted in on the action.

more from my two-fisted girl
yes, her two-fistedness continues. she enjoyed both an apricot and a plum, after she ate her cereal and half a banana for breakfast the other morning. a very good eater, indeed.
unfortunately for my sweet, little girl, those are some kind of big man hands from her daddy!

baaaaa
sorry it's been a while since my last post. things have been busy at work and at home, so i haven't found much time to write. just to catch you up on the last few weeks, you should know that evie is bigger, faster, climbing higher, and bossier than ever. all seems normal. other than the bossiness (which i actually like a little at times), she is a blast. her personality is very clear, and she is very determined - especially to climb on things.
she's also generous with the hugs and kisses lately. i like that. a lot.
she's getting much more verbal, and at the same time picking up new baby signs. she can now sign "more", "eat", "please", "thank you", "baby" and "cracker". she may know more, but that's the limit of what i know, so it's all i understand. i taught her please, thank you and cracker, but she learned the rest from paloma, which i think is pretty darned cool.
she's also pretty good with the animal sounds, so our trip to the farm at rancho san antonio last friday was a good adventure. sheep, pigs, goats, ducks and chickens to talk back to. all great fun until a goat kind of hissed at her. then abject terror. lucky for me i had a bunch of cherries which would help evie get over any crises.
here's a pic of us checking out the animals. if you look closely, you may notice some coordination in our outfits. i can tell you, without a doubt, that that was an accident. i'm incapable of coordinating outfits for myself, so doing it for both of us it out of the question!

a walk in the park
we had lovely weather the weekend before last, and evie and i went to golden gate park with marlon and his parents.
no, we did not plan the color coordinated outfits, that was just a happy coincidence.

hmm
so ever since i've gone back to work, i've thought that if only i went to bed when evie did, i'd actually get enough sleep. last night, i put that theory to the test. mike brought evie in to put her to sleep at 8, by the time he came out of her room, i was asleep on the couch. he woke me at 10 and i got in my pjs and went right back to sleep. until 6:30 this morning - about ten minutes before she woke up.
turns out my theory was right. i feel fantastic today. it's amazing what 10.5 hours of sleep will do for you...

fun in the sun
we spent the afternoon over at a neighbors trying to beat the heat. they set up a pool in the backyard, and the kids had a blast. evie didn't feel much like getting into the pool (maybe cuz lucie peed in it?), but she was happy splashing around the outside.
there are a lot of cute pics from the day, so click on the picture if you feel like smiling more.

two fisted
finally, some new video! evie's been working on mastering her skills with the fork and spoon. she was doing pretty well with her lamb stew tonight, so i decided to set the camera on the table and try and get a little video from grandma. she did not disappoint, though you don't need to take my word for it. see for yourself:
my favorite part is that after she finished her two fisted eating, she started dropping peas and garbanzo beans into that water bottle, and then she shot gunned them. anything to get the food in faster...

marked!
last night brighton and his mom, melanie, stayed to have dinner with evie and me (mike, sadly, was attending the funeral of a friend). brighton and evie were playing pretty sweetly, when suddenly, evie was crying. no biggie, kids jostle each other. i picked her up to calm her down, mel said she thought brighton bit her. no big deal, it happens. i told evie it wasn't a big deal and she calmed down after a minute.
later that evening when i was getting her ready for the bath, i saw the bite mark. ouch! i guess she did have a reason to cry. still not a big deal, it's almost faded by this morning.
i figure this means that brighton has marked her as his own!

another lovely mother's day
so last year for mother's day, evie gave me her first big smiles ever. it was totally heart melting. i guess she decided that she wasn't going to peak at six weeks, and this year she gave me a glorious three hour nap followed by a very warm and snuggly hug, accompanied by a very sweet smile. what more could i ask for?

breaking the communication barrier
ms. evie is proving herself to be quite adept with the spoken word. she says about 15 things that we can understand now, and miraculously you'd probably understand most of them too. there are a few that it takes a little getting used to, like understanding "manu" is "paloma", but she can straight out ask for apples and bananas in a way to ensure she gets fed.
a couple of nights ago she woke up at 12:50 am. we heard her cry a little and both had the "well, guess i'll be up for a while" thought, when she started saying "agua, agua, agua". hmmm. maybe she just wants a little water? lo and behold, mike brought her a sippy cup, she drank, sat there for a few seconds and then laid down and went back to sleep for the rest of the night.
it is so cool to begin to have two way communication with her. she has been understanding a ton of stuff that we say, but it's so nice for her to be able to tell us what she wants. though, i do see signs of her being a bit of a chatterbox like me. i may be seeing karmic visions of some of my lip coming back to me...

a cake shunner no more
evie found her way past her cake aversion at brighton's first birthday party. could have something to do with the fact that brighton's mommy made homemade guinness and chocolate cupcakes, while evie's mommy slacked and bought a carrot cake at costco.
