breaking the communication barrier

ms. evie is proving herself to be quite adept with the spoken word. she says about 15 things that we can understand now, and miraculously you'd probably understand most of them too. there are a few that it takes a little getting used to, like understanding "manu" is "paloma", but she can straight out ask for apples and bananas in a way to ensure she gets fed.

a couple of nights ago she woke up at 12:50 am. we heard her cry a little and both had the "well, guess i'll be up for a while" thought, when she started saying "agua, agua, agua". hmmm. maybe she just wants a little water? lo and behold, mike brought her a sippy cup, she drank, sat there for a few seconds and then laid down and went back to sleep for the rest of the night.

it is so cool to begin to have two way communication with her. she has been understanding a ton of stuff that we say, but it's so nice for her to be able to tell us what she wants. though, i do see signs of her being a bit of a chatterbox like me. i may be seeing karmic visions of some of my lip coming back to me...

like mother, like daughter

getting he and evie down to the stroller to go out to the park turned out to be a tad stressful. the kids did not enjoy being carried down to the stroller and the volume was on full force for both of them. i was in a full on flop sweat before we made it out of the house into the glorious summerlike weather we were having.

fortunately both kids mellowed out as soon as we got going. then when we got to the park, all of the other moms pitched in to help out. i am very thankful for our little friday group.

i suppose that should be my lesson for the day instead of one kid is probably enough...

a very special night

last night paloma and her mommy (dana) stayed for dinner, and afterwards the girls had a bath together. after all of the fun, evie was wiped out and hit the sheets around 7:45.

it looks like the fun and exhaustion was good for her, cause she slept until almost 8 am. mike and i didn't know what to do with ourselves.

she's in a most excellent mood this morning. it's amazing what 12 hours of sleep does for her!

world's most observant mom

so this morning i decided to check on the progress of a tooth that has been coming in for the last week. it's on the bottom left, and the last of her eight front teeth. i put my finger in her mouth, and lo and behold, not only was that tooth there, but there were two fully formed molars in the back. how'd i miss that?

she's had some cranky nights of late, and folks had mentioned to me that molars are the worst, so i've been dreading their arrival. meanwhile, they were there all along. i am so on top of things.

new word this morning. not sure if i'm just projecting, or she really meant to say it. she looked down my shirt, stuck her hand in and said "boob". as mike said, most kids learn their eyes, ears or nose first. not evie, her first body part ID'd was my boob. surely this is yet another sign of her genius.

speaking of boobs, i think that other than pointing them out this morning, she might really be done with the breast feeding. she didn't nurse at all this morning, and has skipped a number of days all together in the past couple of weeks. she does go for the occasional suckle some mornings, but mostly, she'd rather drink her milk from a bottle.

now i just wait for my boobs to return to their former glory and perkiness. don't worry. i'm not holding my breath.

oh, and i can't remember if i mentioned this yet, but evie tipped the scales at over 22 lbs at her one year appointment. she jumped up two lines on the growth charts. i've said it before many times, but i'll say it again - my girl likes to eat!

year one, in a nutshell

we put together a book with the highlights of evie's first year, i guess it's her baby book. turns out it was easy to export the book to a little movie, so i uploaded it. the text is pretty grainy in this video, but i'd be happy to show you the book any ol' time!

um, that's a milestone i wasn't looking forward to...

so mike, evie and i were in bed on saturday morning, things were all going along nicely. there was cuddling and evie was chattering away. suddenly, she said something that caught my attention.

"um, did she just say 'no s*h*i*t'?"

"yeah, that's what i was just thinking."

great.

you know that i don't use that kind of language. she must be watching cable when i'm at work...

my girl celebrates her first year!

we made it!

yesterday we celebrated evie's first birthday and easter. i got her all dolled up in a pretty pink dress and her fuzzy, pink bunny coat. i love being in charge! i couldn't get her to wear the cute little shoes i bought for her, though. she cries whenever i put regular shoes on her. perhaps we need to move to kentucky...

we started the morning at home with some presents and extra berries for breakfast. then we went over to george, tracy and lainey's to celebrate easter. lainey officially became evie's honorary big sister. tracy and i agree that this is, by far, the easiest way for them to have siblings.

ms. evie did not find the cake to her liking. pretty much spit out the first two bites, then ate a little frosting. i think maybe she was disappointed that it wasn't chocolate. i guess i should be happy that she'd much rather eat fruit.

this first year was, by far, the best year of my life so far. i look forward to it getting better and better.

is that a temperature or a radio station?

poor ms. evie has been battling a bug the past few days. it started as a low grade fever on monday morning. we attributed it to her new tooth, but thenit hit 103.6 after i got home from work. ugh. still, she was doing pretty well. cranky and sleepy, but still taking in fluids and playing during the day. then the night before last it hit 104.7! yowza. turns out in babies that's not a big deal. over 105 is.

we went into the doc, just in case. naturally the fever broke just before we went it. figures. isn't that how it always works? doc figured it was probably just roseola. after one more return of the fever thursday night, this morning the spots appeared, so the doc was right - roseola.

her mood is improving (fever=cranky evie) and her appetite has returned. hopefully she'll be back to normal for her birthday on sunday.

not so fast, hombre

so, me and my non-nursing breasts nestled themselves into bed last night, only to be awakened by evie's screams a little before midnight. i guess the new tooth and the thought of making it thru the day without nursing woke her up. so, i ended up nursing after all. it was good. she was really screaming, and they are still my magic weapon. we'll just have to see how things go over the next couple of weeks.

the end of an era?

so for the first time in 357 days, i didn't nurse evie. we were down to three times a day (morning, after work, before bed) for about a month, then she skipped a few feedings this week. today, nothing. i don't know if this means we're done all together, or if it was just for the day. still not sure exactly how i feel about it, but i think this is good. i was worried that weaning would be a big deal (and maybe it still will be), so it would be nice if it turned out to be this easy.

and so it begins

mark your calendars. i officially have a toddler. today, march 9th at approximately 1:45 pm, my daughter looked me straight in the eye and said "neh" when i told her to come to me.

mom, i'm officially going to start getting as good as i gave. you can start laughing now.

a day at the beach

it was a lovely day here in sf, so we headed over to baker beach for a little sand and sun. i had evie in a cute little sun top, but this being sf, it was only about 50 degrees when we got to the beach, so the long sleeved shirt was put on over it. it was still a great day, though. after all, you had sand, surf, the golden gate bridge and cheese...

don't i look cute in my new dress?

hey grandma, here's proof that i do put evie in a dress occasionally. as long as i don't have to do the same, we're all good.
